Chennai: “Check your vision immediately. You may have grown a cataract,” said the clear voice of ophthalmologist, Dr Kalpana Suresh, at an eye camp in Porur.

Residing in the area, she has over 25 years of experience in this field. Dr Kalpana was the former head of the ophthalmology department in Sri Ramachandra Medical College and University.

She is now conducting free health camps in the locality. Her motto is to serve people and create awareness on eye problems.

Vision screening, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, computer vision syndrome, free blood sugar and blood pressure measurement are some of the areas covered in the camp.

Talking about camp, she said, “I specialise in corneal transplant, cataract and refractive surgery and our camps are also based on it. Apart from providing consultation, we also educate people on various eye infections.”

Kalpana also advices her students to create awareness among people. “More than doing this as a service, I consider it as my opportunity to give back to my society,” she added.

The ophthamologist also has plans on creating awareness about eye care, donation and children health. She also wants volunteers to come forward to join her in this movement.

“Eye camps are conducted in our locality often and we make use of this opportunity to regularly undertake check-ups. People who cannot afford to visit hospitals, can make use of this chance,” said Mohan, who visited the camp.
