The State is home to a string of politically-sponsored television channels and the latest entrant is News J, backed by the ruling AIADMK.
With Dr Namadhu MGR and Jaya TV, the mouthpieces of the party during Jayalalithaa era, becoming the trumpets of TTV Dhinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam since their 'ownership' lay with V K Sasikala's family, the dispensation led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, which recently floated Namadhu Amma newspaper, will launch News J at a gala function at Kalaivanar Arangam here tomorrow.
Sources say a swanky office with state-of-the-art technology has been set up at Nungambakkam and experienced journalists and technical staff from leading channels have been roped in to run the show.
“News J will take to the people the achievements of the government. It will also take on the criticism made against the ruling party by rivals. At the same time, it will give importance to other things which will be liked by viewers,” says a senior official of the channel.
To start with, News J will be available on Internet and mobile app. “Very soon, it will start its services on air and be made available on various cable networks and DTH platforms,” the official states.
The buzz is that News J is just a beginning and more channels would be rolled out from the stable soon.
Shankar P, a media analyst, says,”No other State in the country would have these many channels backed by political parties. The trend started by the DMK, with the advent of Sun TV, has made it a necessity for every party to run a channel of its own.”
According to Narasimhan, an AIADMK functionary,”Even small parties run TV channels these days. So, it is a must for us to have one. We welcome News J and will support it wholeheartedly. With the Lok Sabha elections fast approaching, it will be a propaganda vehicle for us.”
