MLA in Chennai helps plant 2,500 saplings

Chennai: Thanks to the initiative taken by Saidapet MLA, Ma Subramanian, places like KR Koil Street, Panneer Selvam Nagar,  RV Nagar playground in the city have been covered under ‘Pasumai Saidai’ project. It was launched by the Leader of Opposition in the  State Assembly, MK Stalin in July at Saidapet.

Varieties like neem, poovarasu, pungai, badam, arasam, maduram saplings are being given free of cost to the residents of the area.

Speaking to News Today after one such sapling programme at Raghava Reddy Colony, Ma Subramanian said ‘After launching of the project in July, over 2500 saplings have been planted in Saidapet area.’

‘"Rare variety like Maduram with a life span of around 400 years were specially brought from Rajamundry and planted at RV Nagar playground. This tree is unique for the special fragrance of its flowers,’" he added.

‘"Our target is one lakh trees as an equal number of them were uprooted in the city during Vardha cyclone.  Free saplings will be given to residents of Saidapet on their birthdays and  they will be awarded with ‘Green Guardian’ title after successfully growing the plant for one year,’" continued Subramanian.

The function at Raghava Reddy Colony also saw actor Rajesh taking part as a special guest.

About the future plans, Subramanian said,"‘Around 1,000 saplings will be planted shortly near the Adyar river side and Justice P Jothimani of National Green Tribunal, actor Pandiarajan and director Rajamurugan have agreed to take part in the programme."

These saplings will grow up to 50 feet length and will be helpful during rainy days in controlling the water flow in the river and also will help preserve ground water levels.’ he pointed out.

The project also evoked good response from the residents of Saidapet.

‘"Our area is heavily populated and these kinds of novel projects will be helpful in the long run,"’ commented a woman resident of Perumal Koil Street.

‘"The project team gives directions for taking care of the sapling right from fencing, watering and other requirements. I saw many children showing interest and spend time every day in gardening,"  she added.
