Lack of dustbins worries residents in Chennai area

Chennai: Waste management has always been a big problem in Dhandeeswaram Nagar at Velacheri in the city.

The area has been facing garbage disposal issues for years and residents allege that the problem has aggravated in the recent times owing to the removal of dustbins from the locality.

“What exacerbates the issue is burning of waste. Conservancy workers burn the garbage once in two months and officials turn a blind eye on it. Recently, we submitted a complaint with a photographic evidence. It was only after that the authorities agreed to take action,” said Arvind Raguram, a resident of the area.

Residents are forced to dispose the garbage in open as the dustbins were removed to be replaced by new ones, but new trash cans are yet to be placed.

“Door-to-door garbage collection is very poor. Conservancy workers never pay heed to our complaints. Many fall sick due to the unhealthy surroundings,” said D Divakar, another resident.
