Karunanidhi health: Modi assures all help

Chennai: A day after doctors said that the health condition of DMK president M Karunanidhi has faced a setback, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke to the former Chief Minister's son and DMK working president M K Stalin, daughter and MP Kanimozhi and assured all possible help.

In a tweet, he said, "Spoke to Thiru @mkstalin and Kanimozhi Ji. Enquired about the health of Kalaignar Karunanidhi Ji and offered any assistance required. I pray for his quick recovery and good health. @kalaignar89."

Similarly, President Ram Nath Kovind also tweeted, "Spoke to Thiru Karunanidhi's family members on the phone and inquired about his health. Wishing the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a veteran of our public life, a quick recovery #PresidentKovind."

Congress president and MP Rahul Gandhi too called Stalin over phone and inquired about Karunanidhi's health.

Meanwhile, DMK leaders and those from various other parties thronged his residence in Gopalapuram for the second consecutive day.

MDMK chief Vaiko, DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan, MLAs Duraimurugan, Ma Subramanian, MP RS Bharathi, Karunanidhi's son MK Alagiri, BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, actor and BJP leader S Ve Shekhar were among others who came to his house today.

Vaiko, said, "I came to know from Stalin that Karunanidhi is well. I am hoping for nature to make him start speaking again with his bold voice."

Tamilisai said, "I am praying God for DMK president Karunanidhi's quick recovery. He organised my marriage and he should live a long life." CPI leader Tha Pandian, said, "Karunanidhi is not fighting for life but nature is fighting with him. He is in the minds of all people."

On Thursday night, an AIADMK delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam called on the ailing DMK president at his residence.

Panneerselvam and his cabinet colleague D Jayakumar said Karunanidhi was doing well.

"Karunanidhi will return in good health soon," Jayakumar told reporters. He said it was political decency for the ruling party to visit Karunanidhi's residence, adding that a DMK delegation visited the Apollo hospitals here when former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was undergoing treatment in 2016.

"There has been a slight decline in the health of DMK president M Karunanidhi due to age related ailments," a bulletin issued by Kauvery Hospitals executive director Dr Aravindan Selvaraj earlier said.

The 94-year-old leader is currently being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection with intravenous antibiotics and fluids. Meanwhile, tight security is in place at Gopalapuram and other areas in the city.
