India, China join hands for medical appliances fair in the city

Chennai: The 20th edition of India's largest medical equipment trade fair, 'Medicall-2018' was inaugurated at the Chennai Trade Center here.

The three day fair that runs until 29 July will see participation from almost 60 medical appliance companies from the Zhejiang Province, China among 19 other countries and 6,000 medical products. The participating firms will offer their latest technology in medical appliances.

At the inauguration, when asked the reason for initiating this medical product fair, CEO of Medicall and joint managing director of Kauvery Hospital Dr S Manivannan, said, "Those who wish to get into the medical sector find it difficult to find the right equipment. I faced it myself when starting my hospital. I wanted to start a platform where all medical equipment manufacturers can offer their products at the best rate."

Ex-Adviser to the Ministry of Health, Government of India, Dr Rajendra Pratap Gupta, the chief guest for the event, said, "India is in the cusp of a major health care transformation. Chennai has been a pioneer in health care." He added, "This three day fair will further improve the trade relationship between India and China."

Deputy Director, Department of Commerce, Zhejiang Province, Zhuang Jin, said, 'Zhejiang is a wonderful place to visit and to do business. Through this export we look forward for a long term co-operation with India. Together both nations can achieve more."

According to the press release, the expenses in health care for the Indian government remains at an average growth rate of 12% as over 70% medial appliances are imported.

The release further said that 500 thousand medical beds will be in need for the next five years. As a result, India has a great demand for imported medical appliance.
