IG to be summoned by Vishaka panel

Chennai: The members of the newly-constituted Vishaka Committee in Tamilnadu police department will reportedly begin their probe into the sexual harassment case filed by a woman police personnel against an inspector general of police. Sources say that the panel may even summon the senior police officer.

The Tamilnadu police constituted the Vishaka Committee to ensure the safety of women police personnel recently. It was in 2013 that the government passed a law, based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court that work places that employ more than 10 women should form the committee to check sexual harassment.

The committee consists of ADGP Arunachalam, Crime Records Bureau director Seema Agarwal, DIG Thenmozhi and retired SP Saraswathi. They are empowered to take up sexual harassment charges within the police department.

Sources say regarding the complaint against an inspector general of police, the panel held discussions late last night. They also held discussions with legal experts in this regard. They have decided to enquire both the IG and the woman police personnel separately.
