Gang hacks cop; assailants held with help of app

Chennai: Three repeated offenders, who assaulted a head constable of police in the wee hours of today at Kaatupakkam near Poonamallee here, were arrested within hours.

Sources said two of them face murder charges already.

The police said Anbazhagan, head constable attached to Poonamallee police station, was involved in night patrolling.

He intercepted the trio on a motorcycle, who were heading towards Poonamallee. While questioning them, Anbazhagan grew suspicious as the trio gave conflicting answers.

Subsequently, Anbazhagan tried to find out the details of the trio using FaceTagr mobile application.

The application has the ability to scan the face of a suspect and look up for the person in the inventory comprising known offenders in a span of seconds.

"While Anbazhagan was busy looking up for matches using the application, one amongst the trio attacked him with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries," the police said.

He was rushed to Stanley Medical Health Hospital for medical treatment. Simultaneously, police personnel  obtained CCTV footage and based on the information shown on FaceTagr app of Anbazhagan's mobilephone, traced the accused around 3 am.

They were identified as Vijaykumar, Panneerselvam and Ranjith. Panneerselvam and Vijayakumar face two murder cases against them.

Commissioner of police, A K Viswanathan, visited the head constable and wished him speedy recovery.
