Former TN Governor passes away at 85

Chennai: Former Tamilnadu Governor Bhishma Narain Singh passed away at a hopital in Noida on Wednesday after prolonged illness and treatments. He was 85.

He was Tamilnadu's Governor between 1991 and 1993, during the first tenure of J Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister. He also governed Assam between 1984 and 1989. It was also the period when DMK government of M Karunanidhi was dismissed by the Centre in the year 1991, under the Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar for alleged links with LTTE.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE at Sriperumbudur in May and Jayalalithaa became CM in June with AIADMK in alliance with Congress won the elections.

Born in a agricultural family in a village in Jharkhand, he actively involved himself in strengthening of parliamentary democracy in India.

He was the member of All India Congress Committee (AICC) for more than three decades and permanent invitee of Congress Parliamentary Board from 1978 to 1983 under the Presidency of Indira Gandhi.

Bhishma Narain Singh is also the governor of Assam. His cremation would be held at Lodhi Road crematorium at 12.30 pm tomorrow.
