Chennai: Finally, there might be some relief for the motorists from Broadway, Kondithope and nearby areas who have been using the Basin Bridge or Wall Tax Road to reach Central Station.

Though these areas are closely located to Central Station, residents always have to take a circuitous route. This often lead to traffic snarls in the locality especially during peak hours.

However, railways officials have now confirmed that the old Elephant Gate Bridge which has been closed for several years will be demolished soon and reconstructed. Once the bridge is ready commuters can use it to reach Chennai Central in less time.

Currently, only two-wheelers are allowed to use the bridge. The popular structure will be rebuilt at a cost of Rs 26 crore. According to sources, the work is said to be jointly taken up by Southern Railway and Chennai Corporation.

Sources added that, while the width will remain 20 metres, the length of the bridge will undergo an increase from 47 metres to about 155 metres.

Southern Railway is said to have floated tenders for demolition after the Chennai Corporation gave its nod to General Agreement Drawing (GAD).

The railway is said to be waiting for the working out of traffic diversion module by traffic police, once that is done, the demolition works are likely to begin. The bridge will be constructed taking into account the future requirements of the railways like accommodating more tracks under the bridge.

The reconstructed bridge will have a length of about 575 metres including the length of the two ramps leading from Raja Muthiah Salai and Wall Tax Road.

The ramps are said to be built by Chennai Corporation. The two arms of the bridge will be 7 metres wide.

K S Srikumar, a resident of Sowcarpet expressed his happiness and said,"If the bridge is constructed without any delay, then it would save a lot of time and fuel."
