EC holds all-party meeting in Chennai; draft rolls tomorrow

Chennai: The Election Commission of India is getting into the poll mode to conduct the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

As the first step in the process, the draft voters list will be released tomorrow. Ahead of this, Tamilnadu Chief Electoral Officer Sathyabrada Sahu today chaired a meeting with representatives of recognised parties at the Secretariat here to get their views on the release of the draft rolls.

Correction work for this year's electoral rolls will begin tomorrow after the draft list is released.

Sources said those who have completed 18 years as on January 2018 are eligible to include their name in the list.

Any other changes including addition and deletion of names can also be made in the special camps which will be held across the State on 9 and 23 September and 7 and 14 October. The camps will be held from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Meanwhile, in its draft report submitted to the Central government, the Law Commission has endorsed simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

The Commission has recommended to make changes in the Constitution and the electoral law to hold simultaneous polls. The panel has said that this move can prevent the country from being in constant election mode.

The draft report said, such an exercise will save public money, help reduce the burden on administrative setup and security forces and ensure better implementation of government policies.

It said if simultaneous polls are held, the administrative machinery of the country will be continuously engaged in developmental activities, 'rather than in electioneering'.

It, however, cautioned that 'holding simultaneous elections is not possible within the existing framework of the Constitution'.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today said that the AIADMK is ready to face the election anytime. Addressing mediapersons in Salem today, he said people have voted for the AIADMK to rule till 2021.
