‘Driven by poverty, MGR helped poor’

Chennai: Former Tamilnadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran (MGR) lived for the people. "His poverty during his childhood days had a last impression on him and that made him help the poor," said Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor.

Speaking at the launch of the book MGR: A Life by historian R Kannan at Kalaivanar Arangam here on Saturday, he said MGR’s midday meal scheme is now one of the flagship programmes on the MHRD.

The book on MGR sheds light on a lot issues which was never heard of and is a good read, Tharoor said. After suggestions from Penguin book house, Kannan was tasked with the role of penning MGR’s legacy and after researching, writing for three years the final copy was released.

The book gives a clear perspective on the life of an actor, politician and humanitiran that is MGR.

TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar and long time friend of MGR R M Veerapan spoke about their relationships with the AIADMK founder.
