Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today launched the shooting of a biopic on former chief minister and actor M G Ramachandran, on the occasion of his centenary year, at MGR Film City at Taramani here.

The event was presided over by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

Director A Balakrishnan, who made a biopic on Kamaraj, will now helm the film on MGR.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the event, Balakrishnan said, "Like Kamarajar, MGR is also a much-admired leader. Interestingly, I had also begun Kamaraj during the centenary year of the leader (2003), and released it the following year."

He said he has selected two actors to play the role of MGR, but refused to divulge the names at this point.

The film, sources said, will have episodes involving prominent leaders Periyar EVR, Kamaraj, Annadurai, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa.

"We are planning to release the teaser of the film on MGR's birth anniversary on 17 January 2018. Plans are on to release it by April 2018," he added.
