Chidambaram's son picked up for questioning

Chennai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted raids at the residences of senior Congress leader

and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in connection with receipt of alleged kickbacks for granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to a private media firm during the previous Congress-led UPA regime.

The raids by a nine member  CBI team from New Delhi, was being held at Chidambaram's house and Karti's office at Nungambakkam area in the city.

The searches were in connection with alleged criminal misconduct in grant of investment clearances to INX Media company.

Sources said the CBI had registered a  FIR  under  Sec154  of  Cr.PC in connection with the case yesterday, leading to the raids. In the FIR, INX Media (P) Limited, Mumbai, through  the then director Indrani Mukherjea and others, INX News (P) Ltd through the then director Pratim Mukherjea alias Peter Mukherjea and others, Chess Management Services Private

Limited represented through its director Karti P Chidambaram and others, Advantage Strategic Consulting  (P) Ltd  represented through its director Padma Viswanathan alias Padma Bhaskararaman and others, besodes unknown officers of Union Finance Ministry and other unknown persons, were named as accused.

Cases were registred under Secs 120(b) read with Sec 420 of IPC and under Sec 8 and Sec 13(2) read with 13(1)

(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

They  were  charged  with  criminal conspiracy, cheating, taking gratification by corrupt or illegal means, to influence public servant and criminal misconduct. Police personnel were posted at the residence  of  Chidambaram  in  view  of the raids.

It may be recalled that the CBI had told a court that it was probing the alleged role of Chidambaram and Karti

in the Aircel-Maxis case.

Karti Chidambaram today said the raids  were  politically  motivated.  He said he did not know for what purpose the  raids were being held.  As the raids happened, Chidambaram's house was thronged by senior Congress leaders. Thyagarajan visited the residence of Chidambaram.

Later, talking to reporters they said the raids were  politically  motivated and were aimed at tarnishing the image of Chidambaram.

Stalin reacts
DMK working president M K Stalin today said Chidambaram would face the issue legally. "I will issue a statement (on the CBI raids) later in the today after getting more details," he told reporters. TNCC president S Thirunavukarasar, said that, this is a political vendetta played by the BJP which is trying to spoil the name of Congress and its senior leader.


Over 10 places under scanner
Sources said the raids were being held in more than ten places at Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram, besides Chidambaram's hometown Karaikudi.
