Chennai girl wins 2nd place in Kural contest

Chennai: Meet Madhumitha, a ten-year-old girl from Gopal Street near Ponniyamman Kovil in Madipakkam in the suburbs of Chennai who has won second place in an inter-school Thirukkural competition.

The contest, in which 36 schools took part, was organised by Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Vidya Mandhir in its Tambaram campus in the vicinity recently.

Madhumitha who is studying class five and another student Logitha Sri represented DAV Public School at Velacheri in Chennai suburb. Logitha Sri won first place and Madhumitha, the second place.

This contest made a difference and stood apart since participants were asked to draw posters based on verses in Thirukkural.

Each will be given 14 verses and from that, for one verse poster has to be made. In the first round, she was asked to do a poster on verse, '‘Uzhavu'’ and in second round, '‘Virunthombal’' in which she won the second place.

After a month, on 15 January (On Thiruvalluvar day), she was honoured with certificate and a shield by Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Vidya Mandhir in Tambaram.

Her father Rajkumar said, "‘She is more interested in Tamil language and painting. Besides, she is also interested in Bharatanatyam. She had won second prize in reciting Bhagavad Githa while she was studying in class one.’"

"‘She was trained for more than three months by her mother. Her drawing skills helped to learn fast and win the competition,’" he added.

He continued, ‘"Her dream is to become a classical dancer and she is also good in academics. I am proud of as a father. Interest and hard work help her succeed.’"

Anuradha, her mother said, ‘"We prepared with schematic drawings as rough drafts, but her efforts helped a lot. We believed that she will win. Every year, they conduct new and innovative competitions."’

‘Practice and efforts makes me succeed. I feel happier about my success,’ said Madhumitha with a smile.
