Chennai: Burglars looted 200 sovereign gold and four kilograms silver from a house near Tambaram last night. They also sprinkled chilli powder throughout the house to erase traces and prevent sniffer dogs from tracking them.

Karthikeyan, a resident of VGP Saravanan Nagar in Rajakilpakkam, went to New Delhi with his wife and children to attend a marriage, leaving his mother Mythili (64) alone in the house here. Mythili left to her second son's house in the neighbourhood yesterday evening.

When she came back today morning she found the side grills were broken and valuables stolen. 'The burglars have tried to break through the front door but they couldn't. So they gained entry by breaking the grills open," said a police official.
