Chennai: The Supreme Court appointed third judge, Justice M Sathyanarayanan of Madras High court, today commenced hearing of the batch of petitions filed by 18 AIADMK rebel MLAs, challenging their disqualification by Speaker P Dhanapal.

Senior Counsels representing the petitioners and the respondents putforth their arguments.

The hearing would continue for the next five days after which the judge would reserve his orders.

When the cases were taken up for hearing on 4 July, the third judge, nominated by the Apex Court after a split verdict delivered by the First Bench on 14 June, said he would hear the final arguments in the case from today till 27 July.

It may be recalled that while Chief Justice Indira Banerjee had on 14 June upheld Speaker P Dhanapal's decision to disqualify the dissident MLAs, Justice M Sundar disagreed to it.
