Chennai: As many as 14 major roads in the city are all set to witness expansion, as the Corporation has sent papers to the State government based on the suggestions of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).

The civic body is expanding the roads in order to ply public transport more freely and reduce traffic congestion as well.

Sources said the CMDA has suggested the Corporation regarding revamp and expansion of 14 major roads including Arcot Road, Santhome High Road, Nelson Manikam Road and Kodambakkam High Road.

It is reported that all these roads have high traffic frequency and congestion. On the other hand, some of these roads need to be expanded mandatorily as they are routes of MTC buses. The CMDA also has suggested the area of land necessary for expanding each of the 14 roads that are to be subjected for widening.

Following these suggestion, the civic body has stressed the government which is likely to take a decision on compensation for affected residents through issuance of certificate for Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) or acquisition of land by private negotiation.

It is said that the Corporation would allot at least Rs 150 to Rs 200 crores per road as compensation fund for the residents and shop keepers there.
