Introduced by director Susi Ganesan in Five Star, Kanika fast rose to stardom with successful outings in movies like Ethiree and Varalaru.
A mechanical engineering graduate from India's premier institute BITS, Pilani, Kanika is now the cynosure, having rendered her voice for Shriya in Sivaji. Presently, she is acting opposite Mammooty in Pazhassiraja, a magnum opus written by the Gnanpith award winner M T Vasudevan Nair.
A winner of Miss Chennai 2001, the actress had some irresistible offers, post that glory. She gave the offers a go, studies getting her priority.
During a summer vacation, came the Five Staroffer. Since the promise was to shoot the film during her holidays, it looked fine from the angle of dabbling.
Though she had only a slice of cake in her debut film, she was surprised to get calls from bigwigs like director Cheran and ace cinematographer P C Sreeram. 'Now that my studies were over, I asked myself as to why not give it a try. You find wannabes dreaming for an opening in films whereas opportunity was literally knocking at my doors. Importantly, I liked the profession and the challenge of acting.'
On her experience of dubbing in Anniyan and Sivaji, she says, 'after watching my voice modulations in Ethiree, director Shankar approached me to dub for Sadha in Anniyan. He called me for a voice test and happy with my accent and modulation, gave me the thumbs up sign to dub for Sadha'.
Being a Shankar's film, Kanika had enough reasons to be thrilled, in being part of the show. Ditto is the feeling with Sivaji. 'I was called for a voice test. After a week, the call came promptly assigning me the task.'
Elated to be part of a historical movie in the annals of Kollywood, Kanika says, ' it was a fabulous experience. I enjoyed watching every frame while on the act of lending my voice.'
Guarded in not divulging much details about Sivaji, Kanika does not look at dubbing as profession or a career option. 'Right now, I am focused on Pazhassiraja.'
