Sir,

This is with reference to the editorial entitled ‘State of Confusion’ that appeared in News Today dated 11 December 2009 .

The demand for separate Statehood of Telengana would open the proverbial pandora box for similar Statehood by those of having vested interest with parochial outlook.

The world has been wonder struck at the unity in diversity of our country of continental dimensions. The flexibility of federalism as the one prevailing in our country has been the hallmark of true democratic process of which the other countries are envious and enamored of. The present UPA has a heavy price to pay if it bows to the demands of KSC.

Ours is now terror-stuck one what with perpetual threat from the neighbors. We need a strong willed (not head strong leader) dispensation at the core to fight terrorism that has a vice-like grip on us. The UPA has already failed miserably on the security front and if any compliance on its part with KSC would undermine the country with the likes of similar stridency from east to west and north to south

It needed the boldness and courage of the likes of Sardar Patel to unite disparate States into a well-knit union, a gargantuan task that drew admiration from no less than Nikita Khrushchev; but it requires a feeble and fecklessness of  UPA to undo good work of the great Sardar. With the surrogate Queen calling the shots from behind what would one hope to expect than a nation getting weakened by division.

Was it just and right?

Sir,

The political fast demanding separate Telangana State has once again brought the nation’s attention to the black mailing methods indulged by politicians to gain political advantages and power.

The concept of fasting has been historically practiced in India for several centuries by individuals to purify their thought process and self suffer for any misdeeds committed by them in the past as a way of repentance.

Mahatma Gandhi glorified the concept of fasting by putting forth lofty and selfless objectives that would be achieved by his fasting. Mahatma Gandhi’s, fasting was a method for improving his own inner self as well as to highlight the concept of peaceful satyagraha as the desirable method of struggle for justice. Mahatma Gandhi never had any narrow objectives or malice towards any one while undertaking such fasting. In recent times, politicians have used the weapon of fasting to create unrest , whip up  passion and to settle political scores. Obviously, the politicians believe that the fasting is the easiest method for getting publicity for themselves in the media and for achieving political positions.

By yielding to the coercive method of  fasting on Telangana issue, the Government of India has seriously erred and has shown that it has no firm principles or policies. It buckled down under pressure and threat. The net effect would be that many other politicians would be encouraged to indulge in fasting to achieve their ulterior motives.

Mahatma Gandhi would feel very sad, if he were to see the conditions in the land for whose freedom and welfare, he fought life long and fasted on many occasions.

Sir

The Chief Minister must be congratulated for opening two flyovers and one subway.
Karunanidhi will be remembered for ever if he can create, accessible and walkable pedestrian walkways in all the roads.  Walking is a nightmare for the city residents. Chennai has the distinction of having roads without pedestrian walkways.
