Five militants killed in Assam gunfight

At least five militants, including three NDFB cadre, were killed and another injured in three separate gunfights in Assam. A huge cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered after the gunfight, police said.

A combined team of Army, CRPF and police, raided village Sonari Khorang in Udalguri district at 9 pm yesterday after getting information that a group NDFB cadre were sheltering there.
     
On being challenged, the ultras holed up in the house opened fire and the security forces retaliated in which the two NDFB militants were killed.
     
They were yet to be identified, police said. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of a five-member group of NDFB militants, Army and police launched a joint operation in Naharbari village and following an encounter a NDFB militant was killed and another injured at around 4 am on Friday.

Other militants, including the one who was injured, managed to flee from the encounter site, sources said. The security forces recovered an AK-56 rifle, a Chinese grenade, 72 rounds of ammunition and several documents, including NDFB letterheads and receipts from the slain militant, sources added. In another incident, two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Garo Hills along the Assam-Meghalaya border at Mankachar bordering Bangladesh.

The slain militants have been identfied as hardcore ULFA cadre Megha Hajong and Dinesh Rabha of the outfit's 109 Battalion. The security forces seized a sophisticated rifle of the latest AK-81 series and several explosives from the slain militants.
    
In stepped up operations in Guwahati, the police arrested two persons and seized huge quantity of explosives, including 15 electronic detonators and one kg of ammonium nitrate from their possession from Salbari in Noonmati area of the city.
