The mystery was solved after police grilled Poovarasi, finding several loose ends in her version.
According to police, Jaya Kumar (34) of Virugambakkam, a manager with a private insurance company and his wife Ananthalakshmi lodged a complaint with the police that their child had gone missing from a church on Armenian Street.
Subsequently police received information about the body of a child being found crammed inside an abandoned suitcase at the Nagapattinam bus stand.
Following this, a police team took Ananthalakshmi to Nagapattinam where she confirmed that it was her child with the help of the dress he was wearing.
As the child was last seen with Poovarasi, the police grilled her. The inconsistent version given by the murderer and the circumstantial evidence raised suspicions over her claim and police picked her up.
Subsequent interrogations with her revealed that the child's father Jayakumar and Poovarasi were once working together.
And apparently their friendship had turned into an illicit affair. After Jayakumar got an employement in the city he is said to have started avoiding her. Poovarasi who remained jobless was residing at a women's hostel in Vepery.
On 17 July, Poovarasi visited Jayakumar, who had brought his child along with him to his office. She took the child with her on the pretext of visiting the nearby church.
After a few hours she telephoned Jayakumar and led him to believe that she had fainted on a platform and the child had gone missing when she was still unconscious.
Having convinced him she was searching for the child, she took the victim to a place in Vepery where she slit his throat and killed him. There after she stuffed the child's body into her suitcase and boarded a bus from Koyambedu to Puducherry.
Suddenly Poovarasi alighted from the bus leaving the suticase. The bus crew who found the suitcase, had left it in the bus stand.
