Heavenly beings alone might manage to grow old with no more than just a few streaks of grey hair. Some even live through three generations without spot or wrinkle let alone loose sagging skin, fatigue, grey hair - in short the aging signs we mortals have to experience. Maybe it's because unlike them we are busy slogging at work trying to make ends meet and seldom find time to gossip or scheme against our own family. What makes it worse is the additional stress that is packaged with every job profile these days.
This stress that exhausts and exerts us has been proved to result in early aging. The mind-body connection, whereby mental stress results in physical changes, has been a mystery for centuries. This has recently been unravelled. The connection is a hormone or natural chemical produced by the adrenal glands above the kidneys, called cortisol. In chronic stress, cortisol production is increased, resulting in elevated glucose levels and diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, elevated cholesterol levels, weight gain, osteoporosis and heart attacks. Externally, cortisol produces those ugly wrinkles and grey hair, which we associate with a stressful lifestyle.
The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine ('A4M'), a not-for-profit medical society, that has been working extensively towards the advancement of technology to detect, prevent, and treat aging-related disease and to promote research into methods to retard and optimise the human aging process. It has been providing futuristic solutions through the study of human hormonal conditions that will in turn result in anti-aging. 'The natural decline in our own hormone production leads to the changes in our bodies and minds that we refer to as 'growing old'. Slowing down these changes through bio-identical hormone replacement, exercise, good nutrition and stress control are the science behind anti-aging,' says Dr Ali Mohamed, chairman, A4M India.
However, benefits of the treatments suggested by A4M are not just superficial. By slowing down the aging process, over 50 per cent of all diseases can be eliminated. This dreadful course can be avoided by preventing, delaying, or reversing the diseases associated with aging. Both the National Institute of Aging and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) have recently recognised the significance of Anti-Aging Medicine as the leading frontier of health care in the 21st century, because of its potential to reduce the burden of the degenerative diseases of aging in a rapidly growing population of older citizens.
The nature of work has gone through drastic changes over the last century and it is still changing at whirlwind speed. They have touched almost all professions, starting from an artist to a surgeon, or a commercial pilot to a sales executive. Professional stress or job stress poses a threat to physical health. At the end of the day you are left mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted, which leads to early aging. Hence anti-aging treatments have become far more relevant recently. However, a few words of caution before you take on any treatment. 'Not everything that is labeled 'Anti-Aging' is credible. A number of products and services, especially the many lotions and potions available take marketing liberties and attach this label to increase sales. However, some are genuine and contribute to health and beauty. Hence, it is important to choose wisely, advises Dr Ali Mohamed.
A4M has expertise in the field; however it does not endorse a treatment or a commercial product. It makes available life-extending information about the multiple benefits of anti-aging therapeutics to practising physicians.
