Sanath factor looms large

Chennai, Mar 22:

Sanath Jayasuriya on song is no news. From the Indian angle it is clearly disturbing, ahead of the now-or-never tie against the Islanders on Friday.

Jayasuriya's decimation of the hapless Bangladesh attack was a calculated one, braving the cramps to finish a job he had started in right earnest.

The Sanath factor should loom large when the Indian think-tank sit down to finalise the Eleven. More than the temptation to play both spinners, there is the logic behind this.

The amount of turn Muralitharan got must enhance the prospects of Harbhajan Singh coming back. Evidently it has to be in the place of a medium-pacer, with Agarkar expected to make way.

With such depth in batting - Chamara Silva putting Bangladesh attack in its place - the Lankans have enough depth to unsettle even the best bowling line-up. In such a scenario, the slow left-arm spin of Yuvraj Singh is to be valued as an asset.

Should Dinesh Kaarthick pitch in for Uthappa, the solidity in batting could help the team's cause in the event of a chase. Known for his proficient ways in grinding the attack, Kaarthick could have an important role in the event of Dhoni's promotion as pinch hitter.

In recent times, the Indians had been undone in not springing the surprise factor. It is much easier for the likes of Harbhajan to throw his bat at Muralitharan, higher in the order to catch up with the run rate. That the surprise factor has been lost on the Indian team is an old folly.

In the big stage and on a big day, it do count.
