C SHYAM SUNDAR
He's been something of an enigma right through his career spanning just over a decade. He can be devastating when in the mood but at times fans can be furiated with his unpredictable ways and soft dismissals.
At the crease, Herschelle Gibbs can strike terror among bowlers with his sensational hitting and the Aussies will sure vouch for that. Ricky Ponting and his men were clueless as the elegant South African powered a world record chase last year, blasting 175 off just 111 balls.
If the Aussie bowlers suffered such a fate at the hands of Gibbs, then what would be that of the hapless Dutch trundlers.
The 'Men in Orange' came in for a fearful hammering at the hands of South Africa in their opening World Cup campaign at Basseterre with Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, fattening their ODI records feeding on sumptuous offerings from the Dutch.
Gibbs apparently took a particular liking for leg-spinner Daan van Bunge, smashing him for six sixes in an over. It is a first in international cricket. There have been only two earlier occasions when this has happened, and they were in first class games. The South African's record it must be said will take extraordinary effort from others to be equalled.
There will be talk about the quality of attack against which the record came. However, a record is a record and it is no joke to smash six sixers in one over, whatever be the standard of the bowling.
'It's up there with the best things I've done,' said Gibbs after the ferocious assault on vaan Bunge.
'I never thought about getting six in a row, but if it's your day, it's your day. After the first three I thought I was in with a chance, but I decided I wasn't going to charge him, I'd wait to see what he does and luckily they fell into the right slot.' The 33-year-old Gibbs is in elite company with West Indian great Sir Gary Sobers and India's Ravi Shastri who both hit six sixes in an over (in first class cricket). It must be seen if this record spurs him on to greater things in his career, which has been a chequered one thus far.
All said and done, it has
been a smashing start for Gibbs in the ongoing World Cup and he sure looks
good for more.
