Hike in milk price from tomorrow

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 31:

Tamilnadu Dairies Association will increase the price of the packaged milk from Rs 1 to Rs 2 per litre from tomorrow. However, the price hike would not affect the Chennai consumers since the association has no presence here.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Rajasekar, secretary of the association, said the price had not been revised for the last six years and the processing cost was also increasing continuously.

He also said over the last few years, fodder for the cows and its medical expenditure had risen to a great extent and there had been an increase in the labour cost.

The association had been selling three different varieties of milk in the market such as toned milk, standardised milk and cream milk.

Accordingly, the price of the toned milk which is widely consumed by the people would be increased from Rs 4 to Rs 4.50 for 250 ml, Rs 7.50 to Rs 8 for 500 ml and Rs 15 to Rs 16 for one litre.

Rajasekar said the association comprised 25 dairy farm members and since their products were not sold in Chennai, the consumers here would not be affected, he said.

Elaborating on the market size, Samiappan, president of the association, said that in Tamilnadu, 65 lakh litres of milk were produced per day and around 42 lakh litres of milk were packed and sold as branded product.

The association alone produced 6 - 7 litres per day and the present increase would directly benefit farmers to produce more milk, he said.
