Protecting animals from reseach

        The maiden Indian Congress on alternatives to the use of animals in research, testing and education is to be launched here later this evening at Sri Ramachandra University, Porur.

        The forum was formed jointly by International Centre for Alternatives in Research and Education (I-CARE), a unit of 'People for Animals' and the International Institute for Biotechnology and Toxicology (IIBAT).

        Speaking to reporters here recently, head co-ordinator, I-CARE, Shiranee Pereira said, ' the philosophy and the need of the congress were based on India's ancient tradition and belief in Ahimsa'.

        For the first time, the finest discoveries in in-vitro technology and environmental friendly alternatives used in teaching life sciences are to be showcased.

        Internationally renowned scientists engaged in alternatives research and validation would give in-depth analysis and presentation, as the students and participants would have hands- on experience in several in-vitro methods. The conference include seven workshop sessions, she added.

        Head, European Commission, joint Research centre and ECVAM, Professor Thomas Hartung said the field of alternatives is currently driven by expectations from both cosmetics and chemical policies'.

        'The impact that alternative methods have had in regulatory testing of drugs, cosmetics and chemicals would be handled in detail in the conference' he informed.

        Chairman and director of Cardiac Care Centre, Sri Ramachandra University, S Thanikachalam was also present on the occasion.

        Around 350 registered for the congress and the participants include veterinarians and doctors from Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
