Culprits on two-wheelers are now striking rich. The gangsters who commenced their Thangavettai in Chennai two days ago in the busy T Nagar area by looting 6.50 kg of gold from two persons seem to have shifted base to Tiruchi where a jewellery merchant was relieved of two kg of gold ornaments and Rs 1 lakh cash near Perambalur.
It is stated that a jewellery merchant from Thittakudi was returning to his native Karupattankurichi near Perambalur last night on his two-wheeler when a three-member gang on a motorcycle intercepted him near Vashistapuram. The trio hacked him and took away the bag containing Rs 25 lakh worth gold ornaments, silver jewellery and cash from the jewellery owner. The gangsters escaped under cover of darkness but were thrown off the two-wheeler when a country bomb they were carrying exploded. And two of them were seriously injured.
On information, a police team rushed to the spot and arrested one of them who was lying in a pool of blood with his arm severed. The other two made good their escape with the booty.
The injured criminal has been admitted to Government Hospital, Tiruchy, where he is being treated. Armed policemen have been posted near the intensive care unit where the criminal has admitted.
A vigorous hunt is on to catch the other two culprits who are at large.
