Former AIADMK MLA Panneerselvam was given three-year rigorous imprisonment by a Special Court in Chennai today.
The court also ordered one- year rigorous imprisonment for Selvam's two wives.
Selvam, who represented Bodinagyanoor constituency, was accused of amassing disproportionate wealth during his tenure as MLA between 1992-96. Anti-Corruption Wing filed a case against in 1997 charging that he had amassed Rs 21, 36, 435 worth assets. A chargesheet was also filed against his two wives Dhanabakiyam and Janaki Ammal under the section of Anti-corruption Law on 4 November 2003.
After hearing the case, Judge Dhakshnamurthy today delivered the verdict stating that the prosecution have proven the charges against him. Judge ordered Selvam and his two wives to go through three- year and one- year rigorous imprisonment respectively.
It may be noted that Selvam
had joined the DMK after moving to BJP from AIADMK.
