Supreme Court Justice A R Lakshmanan today said organ transplantation was yet to be accepted in India which could be achieved only through the active support and participation of its people.
He was speaking at a function here organised for felicitating Dr C Palanivelu for being elected as president of Association of Surgeons of India. Calling for due consideration to the have-nots for reaching medical help to them, Lakshmanan said the country needed the services of dedicated physicians and surgeons.
In order to augment the shortage of trained manpower, Lakshmanan
appealed to the the universities to offer comprehensive courses on forensic science and related training programmes, if necessary, in collaboration with reputed labs and institutes from abroad.
Members of the medical fraternity had to strive hard to maintain the public confidence in them and their services, the Justice said.
Calling for polio-free India, the Justice appealed to the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss to give special attention that no child remained without taking the polio vaccine. He also cited negligence in medical services by recalling judgments for and against the inclusion of medical services under Consumer Protection Act.
Insisting on legal protection for the medicos, Dr C Palanivelu said they should not be penalised until the case was proved. He also called for a Central Registry for providing details on complex diseases, surgeries and important issues affecting the medical fraternity.
Dr Palanivelu stressed on the need to make the Indian surgical profession a dignified, satisfying and rewarding life-time experience for the practitioners.
Earlier, Union Minister Ramadoss
released a text book, Art of Laparoscopic Surgery, and Atlas written by
Dr C Palanivelu. The Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor
Dr K Meer Mustafa Hussain inaugurated the an updated Continuing Medical
Education Programme.
