Over 40 per cent of health problems in the country are tobacco-related and youngsters should refrain themselves from such addictions, Union Minister for Health Anbumani Ramadoss has said.
Delivering the 79th convocation address at Loyola College here yesterday, Anbumani said World Health Organisation had warned that India would face one of its biggest challenges in the coming years with lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiac and mental diseases. He also pointed out that AIDS disease is becoming an economic and social problem.
The effects of globalisation and rapid economic growth has made cultural deterioration among the youth, who were moving towards wrong path, he said.
The Minister said though the country has made an overall growth in industries, tourism sector and hospital sector, there still exists malnutrition.
Anbumani urged the graduates to take up politics as a profession as the country has about 30 crore of youth population, which is a great asset.
At the convocation, about 1,295 students received degree certificates and medals.

Rector, principal A Albert Muthumalai and secretary Francis Andrew also
spoke.
