Ruling out a Cabinet reshuffle in the immediate future, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today also indirectly declined to accommodate the TNCC members in the State Ministry.
Addressing press persons here, Karunanidhi blamed the media of raking up the issue of coalition Ministry now and then.
The shrewd politico that Karunanidhi is, he didn't straight away nix the TNCC demand. Instead he used the inner contradictions between the TNCC and the Congress high command to rule out the possibility of the inducting Congress men into the government.
The DMK supremo recalled the recent statement by senior Congress leader and the in-charge of the party's political affairs in Tamilnadu, Veerapa Moily, that a final decision would be taken on the matter only after a meeting between the AICC president Sonia Gandhi and Karunanidhi. 'TNCC president M Krishnaswamy has echoed the same views', he said.
Ergo, the TNCC men have to twiddle their thumbs for now.
On the vexed Cauvery issue, the Chief Minister said, 'the final verdict would be delivered by the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal on 5 February. We hope that it would be an verdict to cherish. The tribunal was set up 16 years ago by the Central government.'
Refuting the AIADMK's claim that the law and order situation has deteriorated in the State, the DMK president said, 'the situation is very much under control. The crime rate has gone down by seven per cent. A special team of police headed by Joint Commissioner of Police Jangid to nab the grill thieves has been formed. So far the police have arrested 10 persons, who hail from Kolkata'.
He took a dig at the former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for her statement that Ramar Bridge is under threat following the dredging works at Sethu Samudhiram Project.
Karunanidhi said, 'they (AIADMK) had opposed the scheme initially. But now they seems to have changed their stand and have taken up the issue of Ramar Bridge'.
Karunanidhi said all efforts are being taken to implement the promises made during the recently concluded party conference at Tiruchi. With Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad becoming the IT hubs in the country, he said, the State government has urged the Cente to connect the cities by providing bullet train facilities.
Also efforts are on to get a separate railway line laid between Delhi and Chennai for transporting cargo.
Earlier, Karunanidhi accompanied by State Electricity Minister Arcot Veerasamy and PWD Minister Durai Murgan reached Tiruchi by train and was accorded a grand welcome.
Union Ministers Raja, Raghupathy,
State Ministers Anbil Periyasamy, K N Nehru, Tiruchi Mayor Charubala Thondaman
among others welcomed him.
