The Finland-based AC drive maker Vacon has opened a sales and maintenance centre in Chennai here recently.
'Local presence in India's growing markets is essential for firms like ours and as India's electricity consumption is one of the highest in the world and hence offers us a wonderful marketing opportunity', said Heikki Hiltunen, executive vice president, Vacon during a press briefing.
He said that the company is eager to provide product support in India and added that the benefits of AC drives are not much known in the country and the company has plans to build a sales and distribution organisation in the highly competitive Indian AC drives market.
Hiltunen also pointed out that these drives are extensively used in mining power stations, paper industries, oil and gas industry an even in the food and beverage industries.
He also drove home the point
that the level of energy savings that can be obtained with AC drives depends
on the application, though generally it is believed to save around 10-20
per cent of electricity. Vacon has set up a manufacturing unit in China
in the year 2004. The firm has supplied 270 AC drives to Relinace Industries
Ltd recently. The AC drives can also be used in windmill applications and
