Rapid-fire moves and quick matches are associated with Vishwanathan Anand, India's best-known chess player, who reached the pinnacle, winning the world title some years ago.
The maestro has been in town taking part in some functions. News Today caught up with Anand, widely regarded as the world's finest rapid chess player, during the course of which he shared thoughts about his interests and hobbies.
Q: You share your birthday with the legendary poet Bharathiyar (11 December), how do you feel about it?
A: Great. I like Bharathiyar's kavithaigal. Whenever I get time, I read them. I am fond of them, especially Chinnan chiru kiliyae...
Q: If you had not become a chess player, what you would have been?
A: (Pauses for a while) Like my father and brother, I would have been an engineer.
Q: You are hardly in Chennai these days. Why?
A: Chennai is my home town. But, I am staying in Collado Mediano in Spain with my wife Aruna. As my tournaments are held in European countries, Spain is the best place to be based as I can save travelling time.
Q: You go gaga over?
A: Food. Especially South Indian dishes like idly and dosa with sambar and chatni. My wife knows about my weakness (for food) better.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I listen to music especially melodies. I read books, watch movies. I like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and at present, I am reading William Dalrymple's The Last Mughal.
Q: Can you tell something about your childhood days?
A: I was not a naughty boy. Academically I was good.
I played tennis and badminton in my school days, but finally settled for chess.
Q: Do you have any plans to attend margazhi season kutcheris?
A: Yes. I am planning to attend a few concerts. Last year too I attended some.
Q: Who is your favourite actress?
A: I didn't expect such a question (laughs). Trisha. I like her acting.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: I am working on my tournament schedule. Throughout the year 2007, I will be playing tournaments. I have been invited by Kazakastan's Prime Minister for independence day celebrations.
