an entrepreneur during the VAT awareness meet in Chennai today. |
Joint Commissioner of VAT Cell G Shanmugam today said his department sees Value Added Tax (VAT) to be implemented from 1 January, 2007, as a 'tax facilitator' rather than as a 'bundle of hurdles' as was claimed by many traders in the State.
He said this at a seminar organised by the State government at Thiruvanmiyur to create awareness on the advantages of the VAT among the traders.
He further said that till now, around four lakh entrepreneurs from the State had applied for the Tax Payer Identification Number (TIN), and it is expected that many more would follow once VAT was implemented.
He also rubbished the claims that the implementation of VAT would lead to confusion in maintaining accounts, and assured that it would streamline tax collection for the government.
More than 350 traders including
women from in and around Thiruvanmiyur attended the meet and clarified
their doubts on the advantages of VAT. Joint Commissioner (RP) M R Thangaiah
and Assistant Commissioner N Narasimhan also clarified queries raised by
the gathering.
