Tamilnadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president M Krishnasamy today hinted that new office-bearers were likely to be nominated for the State unit while warning that those district presidents who did not work constructively for the party would be sacked.
The TNCC chief also urged the party cadre to take a pledge to establish Kamaraj rule in the State.
The Congress party's 122nd foundation day was celebrated at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan here. The TNCC president hoisted the party flag and distributed sweets. Earlier, he paid floral tributes to departed leaders.
Leader of the Congress Legislature Party D Sudarsanam, and other party functionaries R Damodharan and Vijayan participated in the function.
Later, talking to reporters, Krishnasamy said the party's founding day is being celebrated all over the country and it is an occasion to remember the sacrifices made by Congress leaders.
As far as Tamilnadu is concerned, the thrust would be on bringing back 'Kamaraj rule', he asserted. The party would be strengthened at village-level, he said.
Asked whether it was possible to usher in 'Kamaraj rule' given the continuing inner-party wranglings, Krishnasamy replied that they (factional feuds) were prevalent when Kamaraj and Rajaji were at the helm. 'In a democracy they were not uncommon. They have to be sorted out. Apart from that the party would strengthened at the grass-root level by serving the people and solving their problems,' he said.
To a query on BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu's allegation that the Congress had betrayed people, the TNCC president replied in the negative. When the BJP was in power, onions were sold at Rs 60 per kg. Petrol prices were also on the rise but during the Congress regime, it is not the case, he pointed out.
Sudarsanam, who was also present, said it was when Kamaraj was in power that industrial estates in Guindy and Ambattur were established and industrial growth took place.
He also urged the Tamilandu
Chief Minister to find out the veracity of the Kerala Chief Minister V
S Achuthanandan's statement that when MGR was in power in 1979, he had
given his consent in writing to maintain the level of Mullaiperiyar dam
at 136 feet.
