School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu launched a website - www.textbooksonline.tn.nic.in, which has 322 titles of textbooks used by students studying from I to XII standards.
Pointing out the importance of making it online, the Minister yesterday said that the procedure would increase the efficiency of students, instantaneous retrieval of any important portion of textbooks at any time, be useful to students, teachers and parents on searching informations, clarification of doubts at any time and comparing the text could develop skills.
He also said that the School Education Department is considering to set up a Curriculum Development Board, which would look into syllabus revision and upgradation. 'Since the department is in the process of revising the syllabus, the textbooks would be made available once the process of revision is complete,' he added.
The Minister further said that a committee headed by Tamilnadu State Planning Commission member Girija Vaidyanathan would review the existing curriculum to make it reflecting current trends and also introducing new chapters.
'The Tamilnadu Textbook Corporation has compiled the content and designed the website with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Tamilnadu chapter', he added.
Lauding the initiative, the Minister said that it is a very important day in the history of the School Education Department since students could access their lessons anytime and no longer minor delays in despatch of textbooks disrupting classroom learning.
'With the Government having provided computers to 1,180 higher secondary schools, more students were in a position to access content online, he said adding that the Ministry is now in the process of providing each school a server, a laptop and 10 computers. He also said that they were in the process of distributing computers to high schools.
