Biodiesel from vegetable oil

NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 27:

The Central Leather Research Institute's department of chemical engineering which developed alternate energy such as bio-diesel from vegetable oils was formally announced, here yesterday.

This patented technology produced bio-diesel from vegetable oil through catalytical trans-esterification.

Speaking about the product, CLRI scientist KC Vellappan, said,'the process for the production of bio-diesel involves gas-liquid through vegetable oils such as rice bran, coconut, ground nut, sunflower, palm, magua and sal oil under the specified conditions.

'Biodiesel produced by this process is an alternative fuel for diesel engines without any structural modifications'.

He also noted that most biodiesels available in the market gives an emission reduction in carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon particles. In contrary there is an increase of nitrogen oxides if it's accumulated it can cause acid rains' he added.

Speaking about the alternate bio diesel, Director of CLRI, AB Mandal, said, 'work on the biodiesel technology began by 2000, and a patent for the product was obtained in 2003.

After testing the product at the Indian Institute of Petroleum, it was tested in Anna University and then used in MTC buses during road trials for around 26,000 km.

Chairman of Vel Biodiesel Energy SP Velayuthan said using this technology this newly formed company would get into biodiesel production, the product would be sold to government or private companies with a 10 per cent reduction on current fuel prices.

Production would start within two months, and the Tiruchy unit would produce 40,000 litres a day. Vel Biodiesel Energy has already paid Rs1 crore for the technology and it will be paying a royalty of Rs 3.84 crore in four instalments to CLRI within the next four years.

CLRI also observed the Central Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) foundation day, yesterday.
