The Sethu Samudram project will cause incalculable damage to the fragile ecological balance of the Indian Ocean and bring in large- scale destruction to the marine resources and other natural wonders of the region.
| This was the observation made by Colonel
S S Rajan (Retd) while announcing a padayatra to be commenced by him on
20 May from Chennai to Rameshwaram to create mass awareness among the people
about the religious and historical significance of the ancient bridge,
which is in danger of being dismantled by the UPA government to make way
for the Sethu Samudaram project.
Throughout the journey video footage and other paraphernalia regarding the eco dangers of the project would be shown to the people. 'Many people are still unaware of the ecological disasters which the project would bring in the region, and through these videos, the threats posed to the marine environment would be screened to the people.' he said. The journey, according to him, would pass through the coastal areas such as Nagapattinam, Cuddalore etc, to warn them about the implications of the project to their lives and properties. 'In the last tsunami which hit the coasts of Tamilnadu, the bridge acted as a natural shield in minimising the effects of the deadly waves,' he said. |

He also emphasised on the unity and harmony of the country. He said it was due to the lack of unity and harmony that India was divided. Rajan was of the opinion that after independence people have forgotten the sacrifice of thousands of Indians, who gave their lives for India's freedom.
It is time to take stock
and rekindle the spirit of unity and harmony and patriotism.
