Express brushes past truck; kills one, hurts 9

        One person was killed and nine others were injured in the wee hours of today when the Bokaro Steel City Express train brushed past a lorry near Athipattu.

        The express train from Visakhapatnam was going to Alapuzha via Chennai when it scraped a tipper lorry dumping sand for track-laying work near Athipattu, near Ennore. The unreserved compartment of the train felt the impact of the accident. Labourer Anandan travelling on the footboard was thrown off and the passengers travelling by footboard and seated by the window were badly injured.

        Anandan, hailing from Venkatapuram in Visakhapatnam, died on the spot.

        On hearing the news, Korukkupet railway police rushed to the spot and removed the injured to the hospital. Paramasivam (30), Sheik Ismail (44), Anusuya (23), Prabhudoss (40) from Andhra Pradesh were injured. They were admitted to the General Hospital, Chennai.

        Durai (28), Pratap (40), Jhony (27) Siranjeevi (20) and Srinivasan (20) were treated in an outpatient ward.

        Railway police have registered a case and on the lookout for the lorry driver Muthusamy.
