AIADMK men warned to maintain decorum

Suspension of MLAs dropped

NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 27:

Tamilnadu Assembly today revoked the suspension of four AIADMK MLAs who had earlier been barred from attending the Budget session.

However, the Speaker R Avudai-appan warned the suspended MLAs to conduct themselves with decorum and not to hurt the feelings of members of the House with unparliamentary words.

Raising the issue during the zero hour, AIADMK whip K A Sengottaiyan asked the Speaker to revoke the suspension of his party members — Pollachi Jayaraman, Nattham Viswanathan, C V Shanmugam and V P Kalairajan — who were barred from attending the rest of the session on 5 April for disrupting the Assembly proceedings and moving violently to the well of the House brandishing a footwear.

Intervening over the issue, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said being 'magnanimous was not an one-way approach'. If the alliance leaders still wanted the suspension to be revoked, he was willing to abide by it, the Chief Minister said.

Congress legislative party leader D Sudarsanam and PMK deputy leader of the House Arumugam said when there was an unanimous view among parties in the House that either the suspended members should regret for their behaviour or AIADMK leaders should give an assurance on not repeating such unseemly incidents. The AIADMK deputy leader O Panneerselvam termed such remarks as 'parroting' the statements of DMK in the House. Both Sudarsanam and Arumugam, however, said that they still wanted the suspension to be revoked if the Opposition leader gave an assurance of not repeating such incidents in the House.

        CPI (M) floor leader

C Govindasamy said it was in the hands of the AIADMK to decide whether they wanted their suspended MLAs come back or not.

There were precedents of party leaders giving assurance to the House that no untoward incident would happen, said Y Sivapunniyam of CPI.

To these remarks, Panneerselvam said it was not right to ask the AIADMK members to regret after punishing them.

Responding to the discussion, Karunanidhi said the suspension was not a punishment for the debarred MLAs, but a way of atonement to correct themselves. He urged the Speaker to revoke the suspension.

        The leader of the House

K Anbazhagan brought out a resolution to nullify the suspension of four AIADMK MLAs and the Speaker passed it with a voice vote.
