        Tuticorin Port Trust has handled 4.53 lakh tonnes of granite blocks in the year 2006-07, the highest for a year so far. The port attracts granite cargo from Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh due to simple procedure, availability of land for storage, good productivity and reliable stevedoring.

        The port trust has created a new record on 22 May by loading 9,107 metric tonnes of granite blocks at berth number eight to the vessel M V Leeds Castle, the largest quantity of granite loaded in a single day so far at the port. The previous record loading of granite blocks was 8,710 metric tonnes on December 2006 to the vessel M V Velasquez.
