A 'stinking' zone at busy T Nagar

NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 26:

FOR WHOM? Non-availability of water has rendered the urinal unusable.

The very purpose of constructing an urinal on Sivagnanam Street at T Nagar near the Corporation office seems to have defeated. That's because, the entire stretch continues to be used as an open toilet.

Further, the toilet does not have proper water facility and three urinals inside are in a state of despair. To add to the woes, the urinal is not maintained properly. It is virtually a 'stinking zone.' The place has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Passers-by have stopped using the toilet and instead relieve themselves in the open. This is causing consternation among the local residents, apart from being a health hazard. Authorities must act quickly and appoint workers to maintain the toilet. If that is done, everything will automatically fall into place, says Hassan, who is a shopkeeper in the street.

'Things are getting worse. We don't know what to do. The place is adjacent to the Corporation office.

I can't understand what the officials are doing without attending to this basic problem,' says Veerabagu, a resident of Radhakrishna Street. No one can manage to stand in the place for even a few seconds, leave alone a minute.

The situation is getting worse by the day. There is no solution in sight, says Rajarajan. 'I will only blame the Corporation for not providing water and a person to take care of it,' he adds.

Who sought an urinal without basic amenities. The problem has got worse now, he says venting his anger.

All said and done, residents of Sivagnanam Street are tired of complaining and seek an early answer to their woes. Will their appeals be heard remains to be seen.
