Manufacturing sector needs more attention

        VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan has called for more focus on manufacturing technologies to lead the country on development path.

        Speaking after the inauguration of state-of-the-art Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies at VIT here yesterday, the Chancellor said 'India would become one of the economically strong nations in 2040-50 and to attain the target, 'we should concentrate more on the manufacturing sector.'

        He said that in developed countries around 90 per cent of the products were manufactured in China. The country constitutes about 50 per cent in manufacturing sector. However in India, only 20 per cent products were produced. Hence, the country should concentrate more in this sector, he said.

        Earlier, the new research centre was inaugurated by M Natarajan, Scientific Advisor, Ministry of Defence. Speaking on the occasion, he said scientific engineering played an important role in research activities taken by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Hence, institutions like VIT should concentrate on manufacturing technologies and DRDO is ready to provide financial assistance, he said.

        Pro-Chancellors Shankar Viswanathan, G V Sampath and Vice-Chancellor D Radhakrishanan also spoke.
