Storming the stretch for stormwater drains

NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 25:

Rain, rain, go away; come another day. This would be, in all probability, on the lips of every resident of Kilpauk if the trenches dug up for work on stormwater drains in the interior areas of the neighbourhood are not restored to normality before the monsoon sets in.

According to Prakash H Lulla, former president and patron of The Kilpauk Residents' Welfare Association, the civic works have been take up on major roads such as Ormes Road at Kilpauk but the saddest part is that due to reasons known only to the Corporation the work has remained incomplete till now. 'In fact, we have petitioned the Corporation Commissioner on this issue, but there has been no response till now,' he said.

With the monsoon fast approaching, it is imperative that the civic officials finish the job as matters would be extremely difficult if it starts pouring cats and dogs. Already, the recent showers have made things bad enough as the roads have become slushy and all the mud has slipped into the drains, which required cleaning and in some points, desilting, he said.

Moreover, the trenches have narrowed further the already narrow roads and this leads to frequent traffic snarls. The morning peak hour traffic is severely hit and several instances of road rage have been reported, said a passerby to this newspaper.

School-going children are also affected in the morning hours as the traffic snarls are caused by the digging up of some of the main roads, and parents taking their wards to the institutions fret and fume when their vehicles get stuck in a traffic jam.

Whatever said and done, the civic authorities should ensure that without causing further delay, they finish the desilting operations in the drainage system and complete the construction of now stormwater drains which they began some months ago. Though these kinds of civic works are pending problems facing residents of every citizen in the metropolis, the aspect of not finishing the job undertaken related to stormwater drains has had a telling effect on those at Kilpauk.
