Chennai, Jan 25:
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has said that reservation for Scheduled Castes should not be extended to converted Muslims and Christians.
Addressing reporters here yesterday, the commission's vice-chairman F R Vaghela said, 'the commission opposed the proposal of providing the reservation to the converted Scheduled Castes when the Centre sent the draft Bill for the Reservation Act to the commission seeking its opinion on reservation'.
Reservation process was being given to the Hindu Scheduled Castes, as they were treated as untouchables, but there was no untouchability in other religions, so we opposed the reservation, he said.
Vaghela said the commission found that the draft Bill did not have any penal clause against erring officials.
He further said the commission had received 168 complaints about people getting employment in Indian Overseas Bank by producing bogus Scheduled Caste community certificates, and 10 complaints in United India Insurance. The commission would seek dismissal of such employees involved in this act.
Soon the vacancies meant for the Scheduled Castes in government departments would be filled through a special recruitment drive, he added.
The commission has further
sent a report to the President last year recommending reservation for the
Scheduled Castes in the private sector too.
