Councillors taking a oath at the Corporation meet at Rippon Buildings today. |
Amidst intense anxiety and apprehensions, the emergency Chennai Corporation Council meet which convened today under Deputy Mayor Satyabhama, accepted the resignation of Mayor M Subramanian by a voice vote. The other two resolutions passed include admitting the resignation of the 97 councillors and the enactments of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007, favouring the reelection of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor to the Corporation. A total of 53 Councillors attended the meet.
It may be recalled that the Local Administration Minister M K Stalin moved the motion for the introduction of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007, aimed at providing for reelection and restoring the monthly meeting of the civic body during the ongoing Assembly session.
At the outset, Deputy Mayor Satyabhama read out couplets from Thirukkural and administered the untouchability oath at the meet, which lasted only for about seven minutes.
Armstrong, a Councillor belonging to BSP, who ruled out his resignation recently, also attended the meet. Later, the Deputy Mayor adjourned the council meet sine die.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lahkoni along with various officials participated in the meeting today. Corporation officials said that the remaining two Councillors, Latha (DMK) of Ward 5 and Malini (Congress) of Ward 50 signed at the register book later.
It may be noted that following
the split verdict of the Madras High Court on conducting repoll to the
99 wards of Corporation, the Mayor and 97 Councillors of the DPA alliance
had resigned last week on Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's instructions.
