Impact of chemical engineering

        Chemical engineering has a great heritage in the country, said Dr Baldevraj, director, IGCAR, Kalpakkam.

        He was speaking at the valedictory function of 'Chemfluence 07', a national- level students' technical festival of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Anna University.

        The festival comprised paper presentation, quizzes, guest lectures and workshops and it was held in Chennai yesterday.

        Baldevraj also said the ancient paintings of India represented the mastery Indians had in the aspects of chemical engineering.

        He said that life revolutioned by the invention of wheel was further revolutionised by the discovery of petroleum and the hard efforts by chemical engineers made the benefits of petroleum discovery reachable to all. The growth of energy at the rate of six per cent was necessary for Indian economy to sustain its growth, he said.

        The IGCAR director said chemical engineering has to play a key role in maintaining the growth of energy and advised students to be careful in choosing their careers for which they should introspect before making their decisions.

        Dr R Jayaraman, Registrar, Anna University, presiding over the function, said the Department of Chemical Engineering of this University had produced many eminent engineers who are in top positions in India and abroad. He also said chemical engineering played an important role in various aspects. He said he was confident that the technical festival was successful in instilling an awareness about the latest trends in the field of chemical engineering among its participants.

        Dr M Velan, professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Dr P Kaliraj, Dean, A C Tech, Campus, were also present on the occasion.
