Lovers in Chennai have switched loyalties. They no longer visit the Marina Beach to share their moments ever since the recent crackdown on ‘lovers’ who indulge in obscene behaviour
With their favourite spot ruled out from the hang-out list, Children’s Park at Guindy, beach at Besant Nagar, Palavakkam and the East Coast Road have reportedly become the new hot spots for not only the lovers but for also those involved in sleaze.
So, are the hawk eyes of the police focused only on the Marina? Are they not looking elsewhere? If they are, why have not any action taken in these areas?
Says Subramanian, Superintendent, Children’s Park: ‘We are aware that all those who indulge in indecent activities will come here following the police action at the Marina. Being a place which is frequently visited by children and school students, we are not ready to take any chance. We have posted extra staff at the entrance itself to monitor those coming into the park. Moreover, women personnel has been asked to be on rounds to maintain strict vigil.’
Asked as to why were not the police acting in areas other than Marina, Deputy Commissioner of Police- Adyar, Seshasayee said, ‘We have carried out raids on ECR last month and strictly warned couples indulging in obscene acts. As far as Besant Nagar beach is concerned, no complaints have been received so far. However, we are maintaining vigil on the sands and things are in complete control.’
Chennai Commissioner of Police Nanchil Kumaran had clarified that the raid conducted at Marina beach was not targeted against lovers but only against persons who create a nuisance there.
Speaking to reporters recently,
Nanchil said the beach was a public place meant for relaxation.’We are
not for moral policing. We will take action only against couples who go
overboard and indulge in obscene acts,’ he had said.
