US Consulate, in association with Madras Christian Council of Social Service (MCCSS), a Chennai-based NGO, has organised a series of programmes in commemoration of ‘International Girl Child Day’ which is being observed today (24 September).
Students of the Visual Communication Department from 22 colleges showcased their skills in the photography exhibition held on the occasion.
Various topics on the importance of girl child, why girl child is in danger, stress on women development, women in trafficking were discussed.
Speaking to reporters, Isabel, executive secretary, MCCSS, said that this was the first time they were conducting a programme with US Consulate. ‘The theme for the programme is ‘We also can do’ and we’ve been conducting lots of programmes every year on this day’, she said.
Isabel further said the objective of the programme was to sensitise students to the evil of women trafficking. She said, ‘transgenders and trafficking have a close link and an NGO alone cannot do it anything good for them, it is with the cooperation of many people we can stop this.’
Earlier, the programme was formally inaugurated by US Consulate-cultural affairs officer Ragini Gupta.
About 65 photographs taken by the students were displayed for the competition and cinematographer P C Shreeram was the judge.
He selected R Regan of Government College of Fine Arts,
R Arun Kumar of Chennai National
Arts and Science College, Nirmal of Madras Christian College for the first,
second and third prize, respectively. Special prizes were also given to
S Sathish of St Thomas College and R Karthik of Government College of Fine
Arts.
